Alexander Volkanovski is probably the most underrated champion in UFC history despite the fact that he has never lost in his UFC career and defeated top featherweights like Max Holloway, Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega, Korean Zombie & Chad Mendes.
But he no longer remains underrated by the UFC as they have rewarded him with the next shot a lightweight gold against newly crowned Islam Makhachev.
However, Volkanovski seems to be not satisfied with this as he believes it’s just a pathway for him to get that Conor McGregor fight in the lightweight division.
Speaking in a recent interview with Submission Radio, Volkanovski laid down his thoughts on the potential future bout with former two-division champ Conor McGregor.
“There is maybe a little bit of history there, And again, right now, he(Conor) knows that if I go and take that lightweight title — he knows he ain’t fighting for the featherweight title — I go and take that lightweight title, he knows there’s an opportunity there, especially ’cause I’ve touched on the fact that he was the featherweight champion, and he’s the only other featherweight champion I haven’t beaten. I’ve touched on that a few times.
“So, obviously that fight means something to me. As well as, obviously, the money that’s involved and the whole circus around it, which would be entertaining and fun… all that stuff would be great, but there’s still a deeper meaning to that fight, He knows that, ‘If this kid gets it (lightweight title), maybe we can set something up.’”

According to this Twitter conversation, we can see there’s mutual respect for each other and this would be something interesting to see once they really get to fight.
Apart from the opportunity to fight Conor, Volkanovski has a bigger challenge standing in between is that Islam Makhachev who is also on an impressive 11-fight win streak.
