Burns’ father, who was a car mechanic, offered a deal of three months of jiu-jitsu lessons for all of his boys in exchange for fixing his customer’s car.

Gilbert Burns continued his jui-jitsu training at Nova Uniao until winning second place at the 2007 world championships.

In 2010, Burns started competing globally. In his first World Pro Cup trials, he defeated Celso Venicius to reach the semifinals.
